Learn to Sail at the Lake of the Ozarks


One of the most exhilarating sports, sailing combines physical exercise with an understanding of aero and hydrodynamics, teamwork and the strategies of chess into hours and days of excitement or serenity. If you occasionally dream of sailing around the world, chartering a catamaran in the Caribbean or just windsurfing on Creve Coeur Lake, our American Sailing Association (ASA) certified sailing school at Lake of the Ozarks is just the answer for you.

OYC Sailing Classes

ASA 101 Basic Keelboat Sailing: $725.00

This three- day course is designed to provide maximum value through multiple technical sessions in our classroom specially designed for sailing instruction with the most advanced audio and visual equipment, interspersed with extensive on-the-water practices.
  • Aero and hydro-dynamic principles
  • Sailing concepts and terminology
  • Boat controls and sailing preparation
  • Crew roles and responsibilities
  • Casting off, jibing, tacking, wing on wing, by the lee
  • Trimming the sails, steering with the sails
  • Rules of the road, safety equipment, navigation aids
  • Heavy weather, deck safety
  • Distress processes and signals
  • Towing and recovery
  • Overboard, running aground
  • Returning to shore under power and sail
  • Docking, mooring, stowing sails
  • Centerboard and Catamaran considerations
  • Tying the knots

ASA 118 Docking Endorsement: $495.00

Learn to safely and efficiently dock an auxiliary powered (single inboard or outboard engine) sailboat. Knowledge of basic auxiliary power theory, engine and steering controls, proper use of dock lines, crew communication and safety.
  • Prepare boat and crew members for docking and undocking
  • Maneuver the boat in a confined space
  • Cast off as planned without collision, grounding, damage or injury
  • Cast off from parallel to a dock with the wind blowing towards the dock
  • Dock bow into slip with the wind coming from the bow, the stern or cross wind
  • Dock stern into slip with the wind coming from the stern, the bow or cross wind
  • Dock the boat without engine under sail or bare boat
  • Demonstrate the proper method for heaving a line

ASA 103 Basic Coastal Cruising & ASA 104 Bareboat Chartering: $850.00

This three-day course is conducted at OYC’s professional meeting facilities and aboard one of its well-equipped cruising sailboats, visiting several destinations along the breathtaking shoreline of lake of the Ozarks.
  • Review basic keelboat and coastal cruising concepts
  • Sailboat chartering: planning, booking, check out
  • Float plan, provisioning, navigation plan and plotting, safety considerations
  • Sailing first leg: sailing techniques, navigation, anchoring
  • Diesel engines, air conditioning, galley procedures
  • Head operations, emergencies
  • Sailing second leg: additional techniques, navigation, overboard rescue
  • Marine weather conditions
  • Sailing third leg: heavy weather sailing, running aground, towing
  • Check-in, settlement, wrap up

ASA 105 Coastal Navigation: $595.00
 
This course contains two weeks of home study, phone conferences with an OYC sailing instructor and one day of review and certification at OYC. With completion of this course you will be able to apply navigational theory and practices for safe navigation of a sailing vessel in coastal and inland waters.

Race Into Spring with Ozark Sailing Club!


Racing is free and no preregistration is required. Show up and get on a boat! Crew with beginner to advanced skills and experience are welcome. In fact, racing is a great introduction to sailing while being supported by seasoned sailors. It's also a great way to practice your skills. Race meetings are held on Dock U at 11:00 a.m. Races begin at noon in front of the Ozark Yacht Club fuel dock. Race end times depend on wind and schedule races. Be sure to bring something for the post race potluck!

Go for a Cruise


This six-hour sailing adventure for you and three guests begins with a briefing on sailing concepts before you board our Catalina 320 for a cruise under the direction of an experienced captain.

Each of our cruises are specially designed for those who are looking for something amazing and a little different. Once aboard our vessels, and weather permitting, you are welcome to become part of the crew and participate in the sailing of the boat. Or you can just sit back, relax, and take in the majestic sights of the Lake of the Ozarks beautiful coast line.

Each cruise comes with a LakeSide Café picnic basket with wine, cheese, crackers, and summer sausage. Plus, chocolate chip cookies and juice for children.
